STORYTELLING sto - ry - tell - ing [stohr - ee - tel - ing]
The art of relating or sharing anecdotes, tall tales or narratives, either true or fictitious, in prose or verse, designed to interest, amuse, or instruct the hearer or reader.
According to Wikipedia, the earliest forms of storytelling are thought to have been primarily oral combined with gestures and expressions. We're fortunate today to have so many richer means of conveying stories (or unfortunate depending on what day you're surfing YouTube). Digital photos, videos, audio and incalculable forms of graphics are all at our collective fingertips, waiting for their chance to accompany our personal narratives. But these alone are not enough. Gripping stories don't require fancy bells and whistles - just plain old candor and simplicity.
Storytelling is almost an obsession in my family. You won't escape the dinner table without at least a few family tales from not so long ago. Some of our stories have been told over and over again, to the delight of relatives and friends alike. of course, those always seem to evolve...become a little more colorful with each telling. The time my dad crashed the family stationwagon while backing out of our driveway has become a classic in our house.
I love telling and sharing great stories and encourage brands to make this the epicenter of their communications with consumers. Especially within the digital realm. Check out some of my faves from the road to digital. Feel free to share your own.
